Orr Biophilia vs. Biophobia Assignment

Orr Biophilia vs. Biophobia 

For this blog entry I will be reflecting on some quotes from David W. Orr's Love It or Lose It: The Coming Biophilia Revolution. These are my thoughts, beliefs, questions, and/or concerns.

"Nature and I are two" - Woody Allen (Orr 186)

I believe this is very sad especially coming from a filmmaker such as Woody Allen who is 78. Any good movie I can remember is shot in a variety of different areas nature areas such as rivers, forest, fields, ect.  People love to take in the views and with him being a pretty successful filmmaker  I thought he would have a little more respect for the nature that surrounds him time to time on his movie shoots. Another key point to note is that Woody Allen is 78 so biophobia is nothing new, its just spreading faster than ever before.

The "Nature and I are two" quote applies now more than ever before because we can just stay on our computers, tv's, ect to entertain ourselfs. If we do have to go into nature a lot of us are glued to our phones. We can go on these ways and pretty much live a normal life this becomes our natural environment. It becomes hard for us to truly appreciate nature and respect everything it provides for us. This is how biophobia occurs.

I think the author is taking it too far when he say's things like we must choose between biophobia and biophilia. Why must we choose can't we realistically have a happy medium? The author even goes on to list some pretty outrageous reasons why modernization is bad such as "It was necessary to distance ourselfs from animals who were transformed by Cartesian alchemy into mere machines." Is modernization really a bad thing? I think the author needs to take a step back and look because if it weren't for modernization and machines we won't even be reading this book. I don't know anyone that thinks of animals as machines or wants to get rid of nature all together they just don't enjoy it the same way the other does.

We are now engages in a great global debate about what it means to live "sustainably" on the earth. - David W. Orr (Orr 198)

I personally believe this quote is encouraging we have a global debate going on about how we can sustain the environment. If this doesn't show that the world at least understands that earth and its environment is important I don't know what does. Efforts are being made but the author wants us to have an intimate relation with nature or total mastery. It would be hard to tell people grown up on computers and iPods to start caring more for nature. Same way it would be tough to tell people growing up in nature to start staying in there house more. If there is something in the middle I believe both sides can come to agree and we will be on the right path to a more sustainable earth.
