Smith A Land Remembered

Briefly describe who the character is and their role in the novel.

For this blog entry I will be looking at a character in the book Land Remembered named Zech. He is the son of Tobias and Emma MacIvey. The story starts out with Tobias, Emma, and Zech living in Georgia but due to their 40 acres of land dying out they headed for the wilds of Florida to start over. The MacIveys go through a lot of struggles but they manage to build a nice foundation out of ranching and orange groves. Zech grows up pretty lonely with not really any children but he had two dogs and a horse. He becomes an experienced gunman and horse rider. Zech continues to build upon what his father did but changes from his father’s morals.  His father believed that no man can own the land but Zech on the other hand started to buy and fences what he farms.  Zech marries Glenda and has a son names Soloman. He also has an affair with affair with an Indian woman named Tawanda, which results in the birth of Toby Cypress.

What is the relationship between the character and their environment and the natural world?

Zech didn't have the "no man can own the land" type of relationship like his father with the land but he did respect the land, he did grow up in it. He understands that it needs to be treated well if he wants to maintain the ranching and orange groves. He also seems to have a good relationship with the natural world because he is a horse rider and I don't think I know any horse riders that don't enjoy the outdoors.

Where does this character experience a strong sense of place and what legacy will/did they leave behind for others?

Zech experiences a strong sense of place when he's riding his horse Ishmael through the Florida scrubs. I believe this relaxes him and helps him think. The legacy Zech leaves behind is a new generation of MacIveys learns to ride horses and drive cattle. Also the land that Zech bought and fenced is use by his son Soloman during the real estate boom to make a fortune.

How do you relate to this character?

I can relate to Zech because we both find our sense of place doing something active in nature. For him its horse riding gunship for me it’s playing sports outside. I also think we feel the exact same way about the land and how to handle it. If I was growing up in his time and I was taking over for his father I would have started to buy and fence what I farm as well.
